Most (but not all) of Seattle’s awesome Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival music lineup has been announced, listed below. According to folks at the festival “In the coming weeks, we’ll announce Comedy, Dance, Words & Ideas, Visual Arts, Theatre, Performing Arts and Film. Plus, even more Music. Yes, there’s more.”

You can go to their web site for tickets and to see the artists separated by type, such as blues, rock, jazz, hiphop, global, soul, pop, etc etc etc at:
http://bumbershoot.org/lineup/

– KeyArena: This is the second year in a row in which Bumbershoot is using KeyArena as its mainstage, as opposed to Memorial Stadium.

– Seattle’s Sub Pop Records is co-curating the Fountain Lawn stage, which will include acts on the label — The Vaselines, Blitzen Trapper, Low, The Helio Sequence, etc. — and some that are not.

– Bumbershoot After Dark — the festival’s late-night electronic party — is once again “powered by Decibel Festival.” But this year, attendees need not buy a separate ticket. Admission is included in the price of the regular festival pass.

– There will also be a stage called The Promenade, which will be located outside of McCaw Hall. The stage will feature a combination of up-and-coming rock bands and singer/songwriters. It will also host several Canadian bands on the first day of the festival with the help fo the M for Montreal music festival which is curating the stage that day.

– Bumbershoot is offering programming by day for some genres. So if you want some Americana you’ll want to come around Saturday because the Americana Music Association helped curate a stage that will feature Heartless Bastards, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, and The Jayhawks . Sunday includes a blues lineup curated in partnership with the Highway 99 Blues Club and Monday will host a global music lineup.

– The metal lineup for this year’s festival will be co-curated by El Corazon. The hard and heavy aspect of Bumbershoot’s bill has yet to be announced.

Contest details below -

Following last year’s New Blood Live in London DVD, Blu-Ray and 3D Disc ands the New Blood studio album comes LIVE BLOOD, a newly remixed and re-mastered live 2-CD set recorded at London’s iconic Hammersmith Apollo on March 23rd last year.

Dispensing with the usual rock armory of guitars and drums, Peter Gabriel and the 46-piece New Blood Orchestra re-imagine some of Peter’s best known songs with orchestral arrangements that include “In Your Eyes” “Red Rain” “Rhythm of The Heat” and “Biko” – written in honor of anti-apartheid activist Stephen Biko (1946-1977). In addition, there are interpretations of Paul Simon’s “The Boy in the Bubble” and Lou Reed’s “The Power of the Heart” and much more. A track listing is below.

Gabriel is a renowned live performer whose onstage charisma and instantly recognizable voice combine brilliantly with the orchestral sound palette to breathe a new sense of wonder into familiar songs.

We love records. We love music. And we love Record Store Day. It’s a celebration of the coolest places on the planet, namely record stores. So, on Saturday April 21st, go and shop and buy something from your local indie store! And there are lots of special releases just for this day, check out this list.

About this special day, from the official web site:

The original idea for Record Store Day was conceived by Chris Brown, and was founded in 2007 by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehner as a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally.

This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances.
The legendary Walter “Bunny” Sigler is a four-time Grammy award winner and nominee who has been a writer, producer or recording artist on over thirty-six million CDs. He has over four decades of multi-gold and platinum recordings both as a recording artist and producer. The twelve original songs on this newest CD “From Bunny With Love” are evidence that Bunny remains a musical and creative powerhouse.

Listen to Nobody Else For Me

From the press release:

The Roots, Outkast, Mary J. Blige and The Notorious B.I.G. have all used Bunny Sigler’s music. Nelly’s 2002 smash hit ‘Dilemma,’ was co-written by Bunny and spent 15 weeks at #1 on charts throughout the world. He also co-wrote ‘The Ruler’s Back,’ the opening song on the widely respected and critically acclaimed album The Blueprint by Jay-Z. For a taste of more contemporary Bunny, check out his track ‘You Never Know.’ Bunny’s extensive work with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff was instrumental in the development of The Philadelphia Sound. During his years with Philadelphia International Records he wrote for The O’Jays, Jackie Moore, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Barbara Mason, Billy Paul, Lou Rawls, Patti LaBelle and Stephanie Mills, and classic R&B hits like ‘Let The Good Times Roll’ and ‘Love Train’. The twelve, new original tracks on “From Bunny With Love” demonstrate Bunny Sigler’s masterful songwriting, seductive lyrics and sensual emotion while grooving to smooth, funky beats.

Just out is “David Sylvian ‘A Victim Of Stars, 1982-2012’, the 2 disc collection of David’s post-Japan solo work. It’s a career-spanning compilation of his acclaimed solo work, featuring an exclusive new track ‘Where’s Your Gravity?’. The album brings together material from the last 30 years of David Sylvian’s solo career, encompassing material released with Virgin Records, along with his more recent work released on his own label samadhisound, as well as a new recording exclusive to this compilation.

From the press release:

On his solo records of the ’80s, Sylvian’s explorations in music took him from the pop-funk, stylish jazz and windswept exotica of 1984s Brilliant Trees; the ambient landscapes and epic ballads of 1985s Gone To Earth; and the romantic orchestrations of 1987s Secrets Of The Beehive. His collaborators included leaders of progressive music, from jazzmen such as Mark Isham, John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler to the rock and fusion guitarists Robert Fripp, Bill Nelson, and David Torn. Regular collaborations with composer and Yellow Magic Orchestra star Ryuichi Sakamoto yielded Sylvian’s first international hit, “Forbidden Colours.”, along with “Bamboo Houses” and “ Bamboo Music”.

In the early ’90s, Sylvian embarked on a series of acclaimed tours with Robert Fripp, leading to their 1993 studio release The First Day. And 1991 saw the release of Rain Tree Crow, a Japan reunion under a different name. But Sylvian grew less prolific as the decade wore on, taking four years to finish 1999s Dead Bees On A Cake. Dead Bees included the hit single “I Surrender,” where Sylvian crafts an eye-openingly beautiful vessel around his spiritual journey. His determination to confront his vulnerabilities led to arguably his most powerful album to date, 2003’s Blemish. More recently, he has also released Snow Borne Sorrow and Money for All, an LP and EP from the band Nine Horses. Nine Horses is a trio that includes his brother and regular collaborator Steve Jansen and electronica artist Burnt Friedman, as well as contributions from singer Stina Nordenstam, trumpeter Arve Henriksen, and Ryuichi Sakamoto on piano.

In 2009, the project that began in Blemish continued with Manafon, an album that assembled the world’s leading free improvisers, including Evan Parker, Keith Rowe, Fennesz, Sachiko M, Otomo Yoshihide, and John Tilbury, among several others. And completing the source material for the compilation is his most recent release ‘Died In The Wool’, made up of variations on Manafon and including collaborations with acclaimed composer Dai Fujikura, producers Jan Bang and Erik Honoré and a stellar roster of contemporary musicians and improvisers.

Fresh from a surprise “hit” album, The King Is Dead, The Decemberists have released We All Raise Our Voices to the Air: Live Songs 04.11.08. It’s a collection of their strong, unique, and clever material, including some lesser-known gems. From the All Music Guide review:

Recorded while the band was on tour for their chart-topping album, The King Is Dead, We All Raise Our Voices to the Air captures the remarkably tight live performances of Portland indie band the Decemberists. Though their last full-length studio album found the band moving toward a simpler, more Americana-influenced sound, the live set finds the band recapturing the intricate and ornate sound of their earlier work, making full use of multi-instrumentalists Chris Funk and Jenny Conlee as the band works is way through this career-spanning set. While roughly a third of the material comes (understandably) from The King Is Dead, the band hits all the high points, belting out classics like “The Bagman’s Gambit,” “Billy Liar,” and all three parts of the “Crane Wife” suite. Combine the stellar set list with the band’s affable, easygoing stage presence and singer Colin Meloy’s banter (which includes a detour at the hilariously bad “Dracula’s Daughter,” a song Meloy himself has referred to as the worst song he ever wrote) and you have a recipe for an album that almost feels like a greatest-hits compilation. Normally, a live album without a ton of rarities would be a hard sell to fans of the band, but We All Raise Our Voices to the Air is such a strong set of performances that even Decemberists diehards might have a hard time passing up on this one. More importantly, however, is that the album gives new fans the ability to experience the band’s music without the layer of carefully cultivated shroud of preciousness that can be a bit daunting for anyone unfamiliar with what they might be getting themselves into.

If you are new to The Decemberists, maybe start with Picaresque, The Crane Wife, or the intricate but well worth it The Hazards Of Love. Or The King Is Dead, probably their most accessible album to date. But this live collection finds the band at the top of their game.

Following on the heels of last year’s ‘A Tale Untold: The Chrysalis Years 1973-1976’ (Robin Trower’s first anthology of the albums produced for Chrysalis Records), comes the companion collection, Farther On Up The Road: The Chrysalis Years 1977-1983.

Featuring a further six albums, this second volume collects together the remaining releases Robin recorded for the label, including two LPs made with Cream’s legendary bassist and vocalist, Jack Bruce. This 3-CD set kicks off with 1977’s In City Dreams, which now features the 7” single edit of Bluebird, available on CD for the first time, followed Caravan To Midnight from 1978. Next up is 1979’s Victims Of The Fury, which now includes the rare b-side ‘One In A Million’. B.L.T., the first of two albums to feature Jack Bruce, was released in 1981, which was swiftly followed the following year by the album Truce.

The set is completed by Back It Up, the sixth album on this release (as well as his eleventh and last LP for Chrysalis) was originally released in 1983, and sees the return of Robin’s long term collaborator Jimmy Dewar, on bass and vocals.

Contest details below -

First off, yes, he is Willie Nelson’s son. And now an artist in his own right, due to performance at such venues as Farm Aid, Bridge School, and Stagecoach, national TV airtime on Letterman, Leno, and Kimmel, and rave reviews for two simple reasons: Great songs and even better live shows.

From the press release:

“Neil Young suggested that we record the album live in the studio in analog, which is something we didn’t do on the last record,” explains Lukas Nelson, who penned all of the tracks and produced the record with his band – Anthony LoGerfo (Drums), Tato Melgar (Percussion) and Corey McCormick (Bass) – and Jim “Moose” Brown. “It really added a lot of magnetism, energy, and that live feel, and a lot of warmth to it. I feel like this record sounds more like what you get when you see us perform.” Neil Young, whom Lukas calls a “distant mentor” for the band, also suggested that the band record on a full moon. Not only did they hit the studio – Moose Lodge Studios in Nashville – on full moons, but they also mixed and mastered the record on a full moon and purposely chose the April 3 release date because it’s yet another full moon week.

“This record was all about capturing a moment, and there are some special full moon moments that I think we captured on tape,” adds Nelson. The moments in particular that are captured on this record was the time on tour over the summer months during which Nelson wrote the album’s 14 songs in the back of the band’s tour bus. “Wasted is a snapshot of this last summer on tour when I wrote most of this music,” he says. “It was the summer of debauchery. I was socializing a little too much and not really being true to myself. So the whole record was a snapshot of me making one of the many mistakes I’ll likely make throughout my life. There were a lot of pressures on the road and there are a lot of people who view touring as just one big party. I started staying out until 4 in the morning. It was like summer camp. It took a toll on me. I soon realized I wasn’t really being myself and I had a big wake-up call and it’s during that time that I wrote this record.

But, Nelson is quick to add that Wasted is not just about a summer out of control; it’s about the idea of wasting your time, your life, your creativity, and reminding yourself to stay true to your values and ideals, and for Nelson and his band that’s always been about family, positivity, and spreading love and happiness to others. “There are a lot of definitions for the word wasted; it’s not a one dimensional record. It’s meant to be listened to and internalized. There is a lot of sentiments about missing loved ones and being on the road, and even some political and military hints in there,” he says of the lyrical matter. Adds drummer Anthony LeGorfo: “It’s really a road record. We did 18 weeks straight on tour in the summer and that can kind of waste anyone. I think it’s also great to listen to while you’re driving down the road. And because Lukas wrote it at one time, I think this record is more cohesive than the last one. By being on the road together so long, we really improved as a band and got tighter and you hear that on this record. These songs are really jammy and fun to play live.”

Though Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real didn’t stray too far from what their core sound is, they did play around with new instruments and sounds and a few new influences seeped into the music as well. For instance, the album kicks off with “The Golden Rule,” which has a bit of a calypso vibe, and includes several gritty rockers, such as “Old Familiar Pain” and “Wasted,” which Nelson admits is his “strutty Rolling Stones” song “We have a lot of new instruments on there that we haven’t really used before, like the Wurlitzer, the Hammond B3 organ, Dobro, and lap steel guitar… That was Moose’s influence,” says Nelson. “Moose plays on all tracks and Cowboy Eddie Long (steel guitar) on most of them. We really extended the family beyond our core four on this record”. Along with Moose, Cowboy and the rest of the core that includes Percussionist Tato Melgar and Bassist Corey McCormick , the band also brought in Lukas’ sister Amy on two songs “Wasn’t That Great?” and “Can You Hear Me Love You? That said, at the core of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real and Wasted is what their fans know and love best. Rock n Roll that speaks from the heart . “First and foremost we’re just people in a rock n roll band and this is a rock n roll record indicative of that,” adds LoGerfo.
